NASA's Artemis 1 moon rocket safely departed its launch pad (Sept. 26) dramatically shortly after arriving at its designated landing site.

Mission team members rolled the Artemis 1 stack from Kennedy Space Center's (KSC) launch pad 39B into the facility's massive Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to protect valuable hardware from Hurricane Ian in case the storm hits Florida's Space Coast.

Artemis 1 completed a nearly 10-hour visit to the VAB today (Sept. 27) at 9:15 a.m. EDT (1315 GMT). But after 2.5 hours, a small fire broke out inside the building. "Employees have been evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The VAB is fired safe, and the Artemis 1 vehicle was not compromised," KSC officials said via Twitter today.
